UPDATE:  The Marxist swine won by five votes!  Now the Senate has to vote on this issue!  I want to personally thank the courageous 39 Dems who voted against this anti-freedom, anti-small business, anti-American bill!  There was one republican who voted in favor of the bill and will report who that traitor was when they post the votes online.

###

Here is a letter that I have written to my Congress Critter which you can use if you choose.  Plz do not hesitate to fax, call or email your critter today because the House of Reps is expected to vote on this anti-American bill between today and Saturday.  I will stick this post here at the top  until Saturday so scroll down for new content! I am also asking you to post your letters in the comments section.  Thanks.  Click here to find your Critter.  I also advice people to fax opposed to call or email as emails are being round-filed by the 1000s.

###

Dear Rep. Insert Congress Critter’s Name,

Below are several sections of the Pelosi 2000 page government planned health care bill which I might add doesn’t force Congress to partake,  but rather forces those who pay for Congress. How unfair of Congress to force me to do something Congress isn’t forced to do!  Government planned health care for me, but not for thee?

I am asking you to do what’s right for freedom, America,  and individual’s Right to contract and choose, what’s best for themselves and their families.  VOTE NO on H.R. 3962.

This bill will destroy what economy America will have left in the next several years which includes jobs,  and it will create a deficit that is unmatched in American history, tax small businesses out of existence,  and fine those Americans who choose not to buy insurance which is a ridiculous notion for a country who claims to be pro-freedom!

My body is NOT a public option!  It is MY responsibility to deal with MY health and MY choices on whether I choose PRIVATE health insurance or I CHOOSE not to have insurance! It is NOT the business of government to force me to do what they deem right for me!  Again,  a ridiculous notion for a country who claims to be pro-freedom!

I think you heard, loud and clear, at last summer’s Town Hall Meetings that Washingtonians do not want government planning their health care choices!  VOTE NO on H.R. 3962

Thank you for choosing American’s RIGHT to choose for themselves rather than individuals being forced, fined and told what to do!

Kindest regards,

Your Name

Your home address

I do want a response back.

Pelosi Health “Reform” Bill

Affordable Health Care for America Act:”

Page 94—Section 202(c) prohibits the sale of private individual health insurance policies, beginning in 2013, forcing individuals to purchase coverage through the federal government

Page 110—Section 222(e) requires the use of federal dollars to fund abortions through the government-run health plan—and, if the Hyde Amendment were ever not renewed, would require the plan to fund elective abortions

Page 111—Section 223 establishes a new board of federal bureaucrats (the “Health Benefits Advisory Committee”) to dictate the health plans that all individuals must purchase—and would likely require all Americans to subsidize and purchase plans that cover any abortion

Page 211—Section 321 establishes a new government-run health plan that, according to non-partisan actuaries at the HULewin GroupUH, would cause as many as 114 million Americans to lose their existing coverage

Page 225—Section 330 permits—but does not require—Members of Congress to enroll in government-run health care

Page 255—Section 345 includes language requiring verification of income for individuals wishing to receive federal health care subsidies under the bill—while the bill includes a requirement for applicants to verify their citizenship, it does not include a similar requirement to verify applicants’ identity, thus encouraging identity fraud for undocumented immigrants and others wishing to receive taxpayer-subsidized health benefits

Page 297—Section 501 imposes a 2.5 percent tax on all individuals who do not purchase “bureaucrat-approved” health insurance—the tax would apply on individuals with incomes under $250,000, thus breaking a central HUpromiseUH of then-Senator Obama’s presidential campaign

Page 313—Section 512 imposes an 8 percent “tax on jobs” for firms that cannot afford to purchase “bureaucrat-approved” health coverage; according to an HUanalysisUH by Harvard Professor Kate Baicker, such a tax would place millions “at substantial risk of unemployment”—Uwith minority workers losing their jobs at twice the rate of their white counterparts

Page 336—Section 551 imposes additional job-killing taxes, in the form of a half-trillion dollar “surcharge,” more than half of which will hit small businesses; according to a model developed by President Obama’s senior economic advisor, such taxes could cost up to 5.5 million jobs

Page 520—Section 1161 cuts more than $150 billion from Medicare Advantage plans, potentially jeopardizing millions of seniors’ existing coverage

Page 733—Section 1401 establishes a new Center for Comparative Effectiveness Research; the bill includes no provisions preventing the government-run health plan from using such research to deny access to life-saving treatments on cost grounds, similar to Britain’s National Health Service, which denies patient treatments costing more than £35,000

Page 1174—Section 1802(b) includes provisions entitled “TAXES ON CERTAIN INSURANCE POLICIES” to fund comparative effectiveness research, breaking Speaker Pelosi’s promise that “UWe will not be taxing [health] benefits in any bill that passes the HouseU,” and the President’s promise not to raise taxes on families with incomes under $250,000

Two Out of Three Doctor’s Surveyed …

Do NOT Support Obamacare.

A picture’s worth a thousand words. I love this shot (from the NY Post). Obama’s staffers are handing out white lab coats to make the hand picked doctors who support Obamacare look more “doctor-ish” for the cameras. Does that make you want to get behind the monstrous takeover called Obamacare?

doctor-photo-op

This should tell you almost everything you need to know:

  • Most docs are not supporting Obamacare (statistics below)
  • This whole “doctors on the white house lawn” thing was for show…
  • Because this huge government takeover of the most intimate part of your life (your health) is on it’s deathbed.

At this photo-op the president lied (again): “When you cut through all the noise and all the distractions that are out there, I think what’s most telling is that some of the people who are most supportive of reform are the very medical professionals who know the health-care system best.”

That is utter nonsense. The facts don’t support that lie. (According to an Investor’s Business Daily poll):

  • 2/3 of doctors are against Obamacare. That’s sixty-six percent, or rephrased, “two out of three doctors prefer freedom, choice, and competition” to the big government regulation socialist takeover of one sixth of the nation’s expenditures.
  • 45% would consider quitting if Obamacare passes. After all, since the free-market model will be replaced with a communist style democratic plan, doctors would probably be able to make the same money fixing up Harley’s.

The American Medical Association supports Obamacare. BUT 86% of doctors say that the AMA is now too political and out of touch with the doctors it represents. It figures AMA supports big-government takeover, they’d probably get a kickback.

Look, your health is your business. Discuss it with your doctor. Your health has to do with everything you do. Everything. It is not just that government will control and regulate 1/6th of the economy if the democrats have their way. They will be able to tell you how to live. Really. Right now your kids can’t go to school without proof that their vaccinations are up to date. Multiply that times 100 if Obamacare is in place. If the government controls your healthcare, they can tell you what jobs you can take, and under what circumstances. Sound far-fetched? What if the democrats apply health care tactics to another huge government takeover project: the environment. They could dictate that it is too hazardous for humans to be working on oilrigs, coalmines or nuclear reactors, and then they can regulate strict (unnecessary, or unreasonable) protections for workers that make producing energy too expensive for companies to produce those things on a cost effective basis to consumers. And if employees don’t comply with the government health-based mandates for those conditions: well, then they don’t get health insurance. Oh and if they don’t have health insurance, Obama’s going to charge them 2.5% of their income as a fine …unless you’re an illegal alien of course, in which case you get a pass and “free” healthcare.

Universal healthcare sounds great because we care that much. But if we do it with a big government takeover, you will regret it with your life.

Can we do it with American values under a free market system?

Yes we can!

The conservative alternative doesn’t require a 1,000 page pile of new regulation that has to be passed in the middle of the night when no one is looking. It’s so clean, honest, and good it can be proclaimed in the daylight. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has written an excellent piece in the Washington Post. It is the best, most concise version of free market, conservative ideas that will really work I’ve ever seen. This plan LIBERATES people from the shackles of government, giving them the individual benefits that come with that, and DOESN’T add the RESTRICTIVE shackles that democrats are saying is necessary to accomplish their power grab give you what you need what they know has never worked well in any country where its already been tried.

Read Bobby Jindal’s piece here.

Again, it’s excellent. He says that the democratic plan for healthcare is over (and you know it is, nearly no one wants it), and it’s time for conservatives of all colors to turn the corner, and go on the offensive with a clear presentation of plans that free people to enjoy better healthcare at lower costs and less government intrusion.

Contact your congress people, and tell them the giant socialist healthcare takeover is over. Send them a copy of Jindal’s piece. And – get this – we can institute these principles gradually, one at a time. I suggest we start with tort reform, and I suggest what Jindal didn’t in his piece: that we use healthcare principles that have worked well in some states, and transplant them to others that are floundering.

But you get the picture. It can be done, and it doesn’t have to be done all at once. Let them know you support a free market solution that liberates us, not shackles us, and one that actually works.

Once again, here’s your contact information:

  • Contact your representatives to put pressure on him to reject Obamacare and protect your individual liberties. Complete list of congress’ email and fax numbers here. Another “contact congress” option is here.  Make a call! The capitol switchboard is: 1-202-224-3121.
  • Let Obama know that you’re done with his plan, and it’s time to work with republicans (for real) and conservatives of all colors to make a change to “free market” solutions.
  • Contact the media (radio, TV, blogs) and help them know more.
  • Talk with your friends about the free market principles outlined in Jindal’s piece. Link it on your FaceBook.

I welcome your comments below as well.

“Hear our cry, Obama”

“Deliver us,  Obama”

Now, this is absurd!  Are you kidding? They really are praying to their Obamessiah!  This is clearly where secular humanism leads to:  the worship of human beings.  Obama isn’t even a good god!  He’s at best an amateur god, as he can’t heal. He has to force legislation down our throats that was written by the Tides Foundation, to create so called healing.  It’s fake healing, rationed healing, healing that is doled out only to those who support the false god, Obama.  This would be so hysterical if it wasn’t so pathetic, sad and ridiculous!

Passing a Shell of A Bill: Congress’ Secret Plan to Ram Through Health Care Reform

Tags: , , , , , , ,

NC Asks:  What part of NO do these control freaks not understand?

by Heritage Foundation

BureaucraZy! A Personal Touch!

BureaucraZy! A Personal Touch!

With the President and Congress’s plan to pass comprehensive health care reform reaching increasingly high levels of unpopularity, and reconciliation becoming an impediment, the leadership of the Senate is rumored to be preparing a new secret plan to railroad the bill through the Senate in record time by using a seldom used parliamentary procedure.

Their plan is to proceed to a House passed non-health care bill to provide a shell of legislation to give Obamacare a ride to the House then to the President’s desk.  Sound confusing? We lay out the steps below, but essentially the Senate would pass health care reform as an amendment to a completely unrelated bill so the Senate and House could act quickly and without further debate. Even worse? Nobody really knows what that legislation looks like but they plan on voting for it anyway.

Right now, the Senate Finance Committee is in the midst of marking up health care reform “legislation.” Due to Senate procedure, what they are actually marking up is a 200+ page conceptual framework of the actual legislation, not a real bill. That means that not only has no Senator even read the bill but, there is a high probability that the bill hasn’t even been written yet. If the Committee sticks to their artificial deadline of completing work by this Friday then they would have passed a conceptual document reforming the nation’s health care system, spending trillions, without ever seeing an estimated 1,500 pages of legislation, which may or may not be written.

The current plan is to start debate on Obamacare as early as next week under the following four-step scenario:

STEP ONE: The Senate Finance Committee will finish work on the marking up of Senator Max Baucus’ (D-MT) conceptual framework for legislation by this Friday. Baucus has not unveiled final legislation and, according to the Associated Press, he added some new language to the mark up today. AP reports that “under pressure from fellow Democrats, the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee decided to commit an additional $50 billion over a decade toward making insurance more affordable for working class families.”

Senators have not been provided any real legislation and are offering amendments this week to Baucus’ 200+ page outline. It is expected that at the end of the process the Senate Finance Committee may produce a bill longer than the 1,000 page House bill that proved so controversial over the August recess. Many Senators are upset that they don’t have final language for a bill, yet still they sit in a Committee Hearing Room this week marking up a draft document that is not in the form of legislative language. The plan is to have this document voted out of the Senate Finance Committee by Friday.

STEP TWO: Next, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will take the final product of the Senate Finance Committee and merge it with the product of the Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions (HELP) Committee.  This was the late Senator Kennedy’s (D-MA) bill, introduced by Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), which passed the HELP Committee on July 15, 2009 on a party line vote.  Remember, most Senators will still not know what they voted for in the Finance Committee.

STEP THREE: Senator Reid will then move to proceed to H.R. 1586, a bill to impose a tax on bonuses received by certain TARP recipients. This bill was the bill passed by the House in the wake of the AIG bonus controversy and is currently sitting on the Senate Legislative Calendar. Reid will move to proceed, and he will need 60 votes to act on this bill.  After the motion is approved, he will then offer a complete substitute bill purportedly including the combined Senate HELP and Finance Committee products.  This means that the entire health care reform effort will be included as an amendment to a TARP bill that has been collecting dust in the Senate for months.

STEP FOUR: For this strategy to work, the proponents would need to hold together the liberal caucus of 57 Democrats, 2 Independents (Senators Joe Lieberman of Connecticut and Bernie Sanders of Vermont), and a potential new member replacing the late Senator Kennedy. This scenario would most likely be implemented after the Massachusetts state legislature gives Governor Deval Patrick the power to appoint a new Senator and that Senator is seated by the Senate. According to CQ, the state legislature may pass a bill and present it to Governor Patrick by next week.

Once the Senate passes a bill and sends it to the House, all the House would have to do is pass the bill, without changes, and President Obama will be presented with his health care reform measure thereby transforming within a few weeks 1/6th of the US economy. If this plan does not work, the Senate and House Leadership may consider using reconciliation to pass the legislation. For a more detailed explanation of the reconciliation scenario, please see the Heritage Foundation’s Fact Sheet on Reconciliation here or a handy guide on Reconciliation published in Human Events earlier today.

Does this sound like a transparent, bipartisan and effective way to change the way millions of Americans get their health care? Of course not.

Obama DID Talk Politics With The Kids

Obama-to-kids-150x118

LIAR!

Despite the on-going mocking from the president’s pitchpersons to the contrary, behind closed doorsBarack Obama did get political with some kids he talked to at the Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia.

Prior to his nationally broadcast speech to students on Tuesday, President Barack Obama made a pitch for health care reform in a discussion with 40 freshmen at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Va.

Although the president avoided controversial topics in his speech, he did promote health care reform in a face-to-face discussion at Wakefield High School. Asked by a student how he stays motivated to do his job, Obama replied that his staff gives him 10 letters every day from “ordinary folks.”

So the next time he tries to give a speech to kids and his people insist parents are being “silly” because the absurd notion of the president indoctrinating was never the intention, just call them what they’ve proven to be: liars.

Obama: Shut Up and Take Your (Bad) Medicine!

Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

by Paul Revere

Aids to the president say that he plans to be more assertive in his address to a joint session of congress Wednesday night. The gloves are coming off, no more unicorns and rainbows (except for radical Islamic whackos who want to kill us infidels).

He’s pretty predictable, so here’s what you’re going to hear:

“We must act now.” Translation: Every time I talk about healthcare, more Americans wise up and get angry about it, so we’ve got to pass this thing before the wheels come off of this monster.

“Every American should have healthcare coverage.” Translation: rich Americans (who can pay for healthcare), people who are temporarily between jobs, those who don’t choose to sign up for government assistance, and ever single illegal alien who’s already bilking the system, must be forced into my new government plan.

“This ‘public option’ has a trigger.” Translation: Heh heh, I’m just kidding about this, ‘cuz the ‘trigger’ is wherever the government sets it, so it’s really, “Take the public option or I’ll pull the trigger.”

“You will still be able to choose your doctor.” Translation: … as long as your doctor is the one I have officially sanctioned. It’s for your own good you know. No, you don’t know, only I know what’s good for you.

“There will be no waiting lines. That’s just scare tactics from those who don’t like change.” Translation: the waiting lines shouldn’t be too bad, because Canadians wont be coming down here for excellent timely service anymore.

“My plan will bring costs down.” (Insert your own laughter track here, because the Congressional Budget Office, Democrats everywhere, and even Obama himself has said this is not true). And besides, it is physically impossible to force every uninsured person into a plan and not have the cost go up. AND whatever government touches it always makes inefficient.

“We musn’t be afraid of change!” (I don’t think anyone’s afraid of change here, we’re just reasonably afraid of the biggest mammoth GOVERNMENT healthcare takeover).

“We are at a pivotal point in American history.” NOW THIS IS THE TRUTH.

This IS the point in American history where we either decide that we want a nanny-state that takes lots more in taxes and gives us back a little of what it thinks is best for us, OR we can say “no” to this socialist healthcare takeover plan  – a bureaucratic tax and waste system – and “yes” to free market American style changes that will keep our healthcare system the best in the world while retaining our precious liberties. Check this:

I have heard some of the talking heads saying that some portion of this healthcare bill will get passed. But which sections do we keep?

  • Pg 30 THERE WILL BE A GOVERNMENT COMMITTEE that decides what treatments/benefits you get
  • Pg 29 lines 4-16 in the HC bill – YOUR HEALTHCARE IS RATIONED!!! You can only get so much “care” per year
  • PG 50 Section 152 in HC bill – HC will be provided to ALL non-US citizens, illegal or otherwise.
  • Pg 58HC Bill – Government will have real-time access to individuals finances & a National ID Healthcard will be issued!
  • Pg 72 Lines 8-14 Government is creating an HC Exchange to bring private HC plans under Government control.
  • Pg 167 Lines 18-23 ANY individual who doesnt have acceptable HC accrdng to Government will be taxed 2.5%.  Yes, tax the uninsured.
  • Pg 170 Lines 1-3 HC Bill Any NONRESIDENT Alien is exempt from individual taxes. (You and I will pay for them).
  • PG 203 Line 14-15 HC – “The tax imposed under this section shall not be treated as tax” Yes, it says that.
  • Pg 317 L 13-20  PROHIBITION on ownership / investment. Government tells Drs. What / how much they can own!
  • Pg335 L 16-25 Pg 336-339 – Government mandates establishment of outcome based measures. HC the way they want. More rationing.
  • Pg 341 Lines 3-9 Government has authority to disqualify Medicare Adv Plans, HMOs, etc. Forcing all into Government HC plan.
  • PG 425 Lines 22-25, 426 Lines 1-3 Government provides approved list of end of life resources, guiding you in death.
  • PG 430 Lines 11-15 The Government will decide what level of treatment you will have at end of life.

No, we shouldn’t keep ANY of this! Not to mention the astronomical cost will be a recovery killer. This is an anti-choice, extremely expensive, heavy handed, big-government boondoggle that is just plain bad through and through. There is NO REDEEMING PORTION of the democrat’s plan. But there ARE free market solutions that WORK, starting with tort reform. That’s “limiting lawsuits.” The democrats will never put that in their bill because 95% of trial lawyer donations go to democrats; They will never bite the hand that feeds them, even if it is the best thing for the country!

obamacare-van

THERE IS ANOTHER PLAN

You’re just not hearing it,

because the mainstream media

wants the democrats’ socialist plan –

and their hero, Obama – to succeed.

And lets face it; the democrats do want their top down total control system to be put in place over you as well. More power for them, less freedom for you. More taxes for them, and a lot less money in your pocket; you won’t be able to afford a different plan even if it was available. But it wont be, because if the government sponsors a public option, they will always be able to undercut the private companies (using your money, I might add), and private companies will go out of business. The only option in the long run IS the “public option.”

SO, here are the bullet points of free market reform that works.

  • Reform our health justice system (yes, “tort reform”).
  • Fraud & waste reduction, which will be helped by
  • Moving from a paper based system to an electronic system
  • Create a HEALTH based system (prevention) instead of just caring for people after they get sick
  • Tax reform (liberating the health system and rewarding healthy choices)
  • Investing in scientific and technological breakthroughs.

Get more details here.

So no matter how the president lays down his “tough talk” before congress, keep your brain firmly engaged, and demand your representatives not support this stinking un-American pile of crappy legislation.

YOU CAN STOP IT!

Contact information is here.

You can always contact your representatives:

  • U.S. Capitol switchboard” 1-202-224-3121. Just ask for your senator or representative.
  • Write your representatives: You can get contact information here. By entering your zip code on the left side, various contact information pops up. A hand written letter means much more than an email, and generally gets a paper letter response (even if it is a form letter).

Read up on the latest happenings that directly affect your life: http://www.congress.org/congressorg/home/

I always recommend contacting your local media (TV, radio, and even print or web media) about these issues. Be sure to tell your friends: face to face, FaceBook, Twitter, MySpace, or link this in your own blog.

And of course, Barack takes your comments (and promptly ignores them) here: President@WhiteHouse.Gov

Get to it.

Don’t even get me started on “Cap and Tax Trade.”

Healthcare Clunkers

Tags: , , ,

by Paul Revere

The National Automobile Dealers Association is urging the federal gov’t to shut down the “cash for clunkers” program immediately. Why? IT DOESN’T WORK. That is what happens when the socialists in charge have their way, they develop plans that waste your money, and then claim it was good. I’m going to go out on a limb here, and suggest that when they quietly close the “cash for clunkers” program, the democrats are going to brag that they “saved SO much money with this program,” and “it cost a lot less than they originally anticipated, saving the taxpayers millions of dollars” (because they shut it down early). Look for it.

Now here’s the quotes form the auto dealers:

Imagine these quotes as coming from DOCTORS about “ObamaCare.”

  • 97% of dealers who responded, say the government is not reimbursing fast enough
  • 13% of dealers have dropped out the program because the government is not reimbursing fast enough
  • 87% percent of dealers are concerned the money will be exhausted
  • 3% of CARS program deals have been reimbursed
  • 66% of dealers have not received one payment from the government
  • 25% of dealers are experiencing severe cash flow problems that require short-term loans to alleviate
  • 11% of submitted applications have been approved (though dealers still are waiting for the money)
  • 16% of submitted applications have been rejected
  • 55% of dealers are not confident they will get reimbursed for every deal
  • 40% do not want the program to continue, even if changes are made to the CARS program

These car dealers are just a microcosm of what is to come if Obama and the democrats cram this socialized healthcare plan down our throats.

There IS a better (free market) solution. Seewww.HealthCareTransformation.net for more.

TORT REFORM ALONE would save billions:

  • reduced insurance payouts for lawsuits (and LAWYERS) leads to
  • reduced insurance costs leads to
  • reduced malpractice insurance costs for doctors which leads to
  • reduced charges to the customer (you!) which leads to
  • more money in your pocket and more choices!!

See! There IS a better way! And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Cash for Caskets

Tags: , , , , ,

NC Sez:  The government is seeing dead people everywhere.

Which one you want? The Government will Pay for it!

Which one you want? The Government will Pay for it!

Apparently, because of how prosperous the Obama economy has lifted people up out of their poverty, there is an increase for tax payer money for Cash for Caskets.  People are wanting cash to bury their dead, sort of like cash for clunkers, the kids in the nanny state, want cash for caskets.

“People just aren’t in a position to pay $7,000 for a private funeral and burial,” says Lt. David Smith of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, where the number of people seeking county burial has nearly doubled since last year.

Stats from a USA Today article states:

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office handled a 97% increase of  indigent deaths from January to June ‘09.

“It has put a major financial strain on this department,” Smith says. “I need to come up with $12,000 a month in a budget that’s locked up tight as a drum.”

Last February, the county coroner was notified that the crematory  was “overflowing with natural death cases and couldn’t handle cases from the coroner, who handles accidental deaths, homicides and unidentified people,”

Las Vegas is reporting a surge in indigent cremations and burials this year causing capacity issues as well as reports from Kenton County, Ky expecting a “record year of indigent burials,” USA reports.

Here’s the obvious bottom: if Counties are having financial problems burying their dead,  in this Great Recession, how will Counties across this country tolerate the kids needing mass health care since the kids are reaching retirement age?

Once again another example of a stunning and well-oiled government run service . Oh, I just can’t wait for that  utopian style health care!

You think you see dead people now, you just wait for free utopian-style government planned health care!  Makes my heart flutter!

Obama Goes Postal, Lands in Dead-Letter Office: Caroline Baum

Tags: , , ,

Commentary by Caroline Baum

“UPS and FedEx are doing just fine. It’s the Post Office that’s always having problems.” — Barack Obama, Aug. 11, 2009

No institution has been the butt of more government- inefficiency jokes than the U.S. Postal Service. Maybe the Department of Motor Vehicles.

people-in-line-at-usps

Your Future if Gov't Plans Your Health Care?

The only way the post office can stay in business is its government subsidy. The USPS lost $2.4 billion in the quarter ended in June and projects a net loss of $7 billion in fiscal 2009, outstanding debt of more than $10 billion and a cash shortfall of $1 billion. It was moved to intensive care — the Government Accountability Office’s list of “high risk” cases – - last month and told to shape up. (It must be the only entity that hasn’t cashed in on TARP!)

That didn’t stop President Barack Obama from holding up the post office as an example at a town hall meeting in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, last week.

When Obama compared the post office to UPS and FedEx, he was clearly hoping to assuage voter concerns about a public health-care option undercutting and eliminating private insurance.

What he did instead was conjure up visions of long lines and interminable waits. Why do we need or want a health-care system that works like the post office?

What’s more, if the USPS is struggling to compete with private companies, as Obama implied, why introduce a government health-care option that would operate at the same disadvantage?

Obama Unscripted

These are just two of the questions someone listening to the president’s health-insurance reform roadshow might want to ask.

Impromptu Obamanomics is getting scarier by the day. For all the president’s touted intelligence, his un-teleprompted comments reveal a basic misunderstanding of capitalist principles.

For example, asked at the Portsmouth town hall how private insurance companies can compete with the government, the president said the following:

“If the private insurance companies are providing a good bargain, and if the public option has to be self-sustaining — meaning taxpayers aren’t subsidizing it, but it has to run on charging premiums and providing good services and a good network of doctors, just like any other private insurer would do — then I think private insurers should be able to compete.”

Self-sustaining? The public option? What has Obama been doing during those daily 40-minute economic briefings coordinated by uber-economic-adviser, Larry Summers?

Capitalism Explained

Government programs aren’t self-sustaining by definition. They’re subsidized by the taxpayer. If they were self-financed, we’d be off the hook.

Llewellyn Rockwell Jr., chairman of the Ludwig von Mises Institute in Auburn, Alabama, and editor of LewRockwell.com, put it this way in an Aug. 13 commentary on Mises.org:

“The only reason for a government service is precisely to provide financial support for an operation that is otherwise unsustainable, or else there would be no point in the government’s involvement at all.”

Rockwell sees no “economic reason for a government postal system” and would abolish it.

Of course, there’s the small matter of the U.S. Constitution. Article 1, Section 8, grants Congress the power “to establish Post Offices and Post Roads.” A series of subsequent statutes gave the USPS a monopoly in the delivery of first-class mail. Congress thought that without such protection, private carriers would cherry-pick the high-profit routes and leave money-losing deliveries in remote areas to the post office. (In those days, the USPS covered most of its expenses with revenue.)

Less Bad Option

It was only through exemptions in the law that private carriers, such as UPS and FedEx, were allowed to compete in the delivery of overnight mail.

Short of a constitutional amendment or a waiver from Congress, we are stuck with the USPS.

But back to our storyline. Everyone makes a mistake or flubs a line when asked questions on the spot, including the president of the United States. We can overlook run-on sentences, subject and verb tense disagreement, even a memory lapse when it comes to facts and figures.

The proliferation of Obama’s gaffes and non sequiturs on health care has exceeded the allowable limit. He has failed repeatedly to explain how the government will provide more (health care) for less (money). He has failed to explain why increased demand for medical services without a concomitant increase in supply won’t lead to rationing by government bureaucrats as opposed to the market. And he has failed to explain why a Medicare-like model is desirable when Medicare itself is going broke.

The public is left with one of two unsettling conclusions: Either the president doesn’t understand the health-insurance reform plans working their way through Congress, or he understands both the plans and the implications and is being untruthful about the impact.

Neither option is good; ignorance is clearly preferable to the alternative.
