In this essay a discussion will be made of the purpose and relevance of the Mosaic Law in Israelite society as well as the relevance of this Law in the Believer’s life for today. The Mosaic Law is also known as the Torah or first five books of the TaNaK and was given to Moses on Mt. Sinai, perfectly written down on stone tablets by the finger of God (Exodus 19). Torah means instruction or teaching. “Torah can be traced to the Hebrew word meaning ‘to shoot an arrow,’ or ‘to hit the mark’ (Berkowitz A., & D, 1996, p. 7). The hebrew term halakah which comes from the root verb to walk means the habitual walking and practice of the Torah in one’s life. The purpose of the Mosaic Law to the Hebrew people was to make a covenant or brit between the Creator and the new nation of Israel.
Contrary to erroneous popular belief that the entire Torah is obsolete, “ . . . ever since the new covenant of Jesus Christ made the old covenant obsolete (Heb. 8:13)” (H & W, 2005. p. 13), it still has relevant purpose today not only for Israel, but also for those who follow Yeshua, since Yeshua himself followed the Torah. If the Mosaic Covenant (Law) is not relevant, in other words, obsolete, to Israelites today then this covenant is not relevant to the followers of Yeshua either which begs two questions:
- By what standard should the people of God–Israelite and Gentile–be walking? and
- Did God change His mind?
This paper is intended to show that the covenant made with Israel at Mt. Sinai is that same covenant Yeshua expects His followers to observe today.
