Queens Imam a Convicted Sex Offender

The Queens imam implicated in a plot to bomb New York insists he’s no Al Qaeda terrorist, but court records reveal he’s a sex offender.
Ahmad Afzali was busted on June 24, 1992 – when he was 20 – for publicly grabbing, pinching, and fondling a woman’s derriere, despite her cries and protests, and making lewd and salacious remarks.
The deranged imam was indicted for sex abuse but pleaded guilty to a lesser charge – attempted sex abuse – and served six months in jail, with five years’ probation.
Afzali also served as a paid informant to the NYPD and the FBI, who were unaware that he was a double agent for al Qaeda.
The imam remains in custody on charges that he warned Najibullah Zazi, the suspected brains behind the plot, that the feds were aware of Zazi’s plans to detonate weapons of mass destruction throughout New York City.
Afzali’s sordid past came to light as Zazi was indicted by a grand jury in Denver, where plans for moving him to a federal facility in New York are now underway.
Asked when Zazi could be moved, a U.S. Marshals Service spokesman would say only, “We never comment on prisoner transfers.”
Zazi, 25, who the feds say has admitted getting “weapons and explosives” training at an Al Qaeda camp in Pakistan, was arrested last weekend along with his father, Mohammed, 53.
Counterterrorism agents are now searching sites throughout the New York City metropolitan area for bombs that may have been constructed by Zazi and his fellow terrorists. Yesterday, the agents expanded their search to Staten Island, where they combed through a mini-storage facility looking for chemical and biological agents.
Federal investigators have questioned more than a dozen friends and acquaintances of Zazi, an Afghan immigrant, who spent several days in New York around Sept. 11 before returning home to Colorado.
